Review Loopholic 5 v2 by TKI Lazeman (www.loopholic.com)

Contact person: Jang

Pre-order: After reading lots of opinions, forums and reviews and thus comparing the different possibilities, I chose the Loopholic for it¡¯s versatility, amp-selecting, MIDI-controlling and the 10 loops + 1 volume loop. The website looks a bit amateurish and cheap, but it contains the basic info about the different products, some pictures, reviews and video¡¯s. You can download the manuals which is nice, because that gives you a pretty good idea about what you¡¯re buying.

I contacted them through e-mail and got a very quick reaction from Jang. He is very kind and helpful, but his English is rather basic.

But it¡¯s always better to be answered quick in basic English than not to be answered at all! After giving it some thought, I decided to order one.

Ordering andshipping: After paying $720 through PayPal, Jang contacted me immediately with a FedEx tracking number and a day later, I could see on the FedEx website that my package had been picked up. Two days later, I received a phone call from FedExBelgium with a warning that I had to pay $165 for import and taxes upon delivery. This was a bit unexpected, but that¡¯s probably my mistake since I never ordered something this expensive over the internet. But it might be important for future European buyers to keep that in mind. So the actual price was $885 delivered at my doorstep. (That is about 650 Euros at this moment.)

The package: It¡¯s fairly simple actually¡¦ You get the Loopholic, a 15V DC center positive adapter. Packaging was done very decent with several layers of bubble wrap, a cardboard box and double brown paper. The package survived the trip without a scratch.

Testing the unit: So far, so good, but of course the most important thing about buying a true bypass looper, is that it has to loop pedals and stay very quiet while doing so. At first I had some problems with some kind of hum which Jang told me probably came from a grounding problem with the adapter. So I went online and bought a DOUBLE ISOLATED Toshiba (laptop) adapter and the problem was fixed. As Jang had no previous experience with this issue, he was so kind to refund the purchase price of the adapter. So he helped intensively with the search for the problem and he paid for the solution. That¡¯s a really good service, if you ask me! Once this issue had been solved, the looper was dead quiet. I spent a lot of hours arranging my pedals and building them into my MKS Pedal Pad. When this was done, it all went very quickly. Learning how the Loopholic works is really easy. First of all, I had already watched the YouTube video by Leroy Miller, so I knew about the basics. But really, it¡¯s as easy as falling off a log. You hold the mode button, push on the buttons of the pedals you want in your loop and push the save button.

Even the MIDI-programming is child¡¯s play.

There is no audible popping when switching except when you switch from a 6-pedal heavy preset, to a clean preset, but that¡¯s normal because you switch of 6 pedals at a time. The unit is built like a tank and the switches are very easy to push. They don¡¯t have the loud ¡®TACK¡¯ sound most pedals have. The unit has a very good buffer that can be activated or deactivated in every patch you make. The display is big enough and displays all the different commands very clearly once you understand the code.I can¡¯t say I like the design of the Loopholic, but what the hell, it¡¯s a f*cking pedal switcher, it needs to switch pedals. I put some stickers on it to ease the pain. ;-)I think the Loopholic is very good value for money and I think it will be quite popular once the word is spread!

Overall

The Loopholic 5 is easy to use, very versatile, silent, well built and ugly as hell so I would give it 9 out of 10 if asked to score on a scale of 10. But since nobody asked, I¡¯m not going to do that. :-DAt this price, there was no alternative that provided 10 loops and the ability to command multiple (5)MIDI devices at a time. (Because you never know what your next pedal will be!)Watch my video-review on YouTube if you want to find out more.
